What Happens During a Root Canal?

One of our esteemed dentists will begin the process by administering local anesthesia to numb the tooth and its surrounding area. We’ll also provide sedation if requested. Once a dental dam is in place to help isolate the tooth and keep any moisture from reaching the surgical area, we will make an opening at the top of the crown.

Using specialized dental instruments and careful precision, we will begin to clear away any decayed portions of the tooth, removing the infected pulp, and cleaning various canals and chambers to ensure no bacteria remain. When finished, we’ll fill the tooth with a biocompatible substance known as gutta-percha that will help to seal the tooth so that reinfection does not occur. When ready, a custom dental crown will be put into place using impressions taken of your tooth so that it will remain protected while strengthening over time.
